BalconyClimate

BalconyClimate
Hack4Climate

Project Name: BalconyClimate

Local and Global living environment research and evaluation accompanied with community activities to take action and improve local (and global) climate.

Gather and evaluate Climate parameters / data with Multi sensors (e.g. Temp, air condition information, rain, sunshine…) on private and corporate balconies, which are connected to local hosts (e.g. Raspberry PI / node) connected to network via DSL, WIFI, other protocols and collect weather and air condition data. To store the large amounts of data collected, methods like IPFS (P2P Hypermedia protocol / ipfs.io, Intel SGX, proof of luck) are planned to be used. Blockchain is relevant because of

1. Data protection against forgery

– Proof of authenticity (data was not modified)
– Proof of time (data existed at certain time)
– Proof of location (data was measured there, Web-of-Trust)

2. Community (Group consensus, evaluation, voting….) enabled by Smartphone Frontend (d)App (iOS, Android…)

The data collection is done for statistic research and qualified feedback to the local communities. For this purpose evaluation and voting tools are developed to support communities in acting against pollution and climate change. The realisation is intended to use Ethereum and IOTA as blockchain components.

Challenge Area:

Project Drivers (More in-depth explanation of project):

Collect and evaluate data, to generate valid results about regional climate for research and concrete community based local improvement programs
Increase personal and collective awareness and mindfulness. Initiate change of identification and behavior. Think global, act local. Many small activities with effects contribute to a global change.
Support local communities to influence regional governments and politics to engage in climate improvement programs. Synchronize and cooperate with other networks and activities in the area of climate data survey and research.
Be able to control the effects (measurement before <=>after)
BalconyClimate could be positioned as a framework and platform to involve international and regional industry partners and sponsors.

Status/Next Steps:

An MVP based on Ethereum blockchain was developed as part of the #Hack4Climate Hackathon taking place while #COP23 climate conference in Bonn.
Continuous networking to find partners (ongoing). At next, funding is needed to develop and connect standardized and suitable sensor boxes. As soon as the sensor hardware has achieved an adequate quality standard, first community members can be recruited, who actively provide data and make it available for evaluation.
At the same time, the Blockchain software infrastructure and apps have to be developed, which shall provide members with influencing functionalities (e.g. voting, evaluation).
Additionally project team evaluates other platforms (like IOTA) that might be more suitable for processing large number of expected transactions (sensor measurements) in a cost efficient way.
